It's that time again – the three most intense, emotional, and loudest weeks of the CrossFit year are upon us. Starting February 26th, the entire community will be measured against the same workouts. From Games professionals to beginners who have just mastered their first double-unders.
The CrossFit Open is the largest mass sports event in the world. And you are invited.
In this guide, you'll learn everything: from the rule changes in 2026 to registration and perfect preparation – including an equipment check.
What's new in 2026?
CrossFit HQ is returning to proven structures in 2026 – and making the competition truly exciting for the masses again.
Quarterfinals are back – for the top 25%. This is the biggest change. In 2025, the hurdle was brutally high: only the top 1–2% advanced. In 2026, the best 25% worldwide will qualify for the Quarterfinals. This means: If you train regularly and deliver solid Open workouts, you have a realistic chance of making it to the next round. A huge motivational boost.
Affiliate requirement. All Open workouts must now be completed at an official CrossFit Affiliate if the athlete wants to qualify for the Quarterfinals. The only exception: Workout 26.3 may be performed at Wodapalooza Miami.
Service Cup. The Service Cup (presented by the Air National Guard) introduces special leaderboards for first responders, military, teachers, and medical personnel. A cool initiative.
More Live Action. Masters and Teams will again have in-person competitions (Semifinals) instead of purely online formats.
Smaller field of participants at the Games. Only the top 30 men and 30 women will compete in San Jose in July.
Adaptive Divisions. Athletes with physical or intellectual impairments can participate in their own divisions with adapted standards. Same schedule, same energy.

The Process – Week by Week
The rhythm is always the same for three weeks. Simple, clear, no stress.
Thursday, 9:00 PM CET: The workout is announced live. Four top athletes perform it live as the first. The announcement of 26.1 will take place at Moffett Air National Guard Base – broadcast on the CrossFit Games website, app, and YouTube channel.
Friday to Monday: Your window to complete the workout at your affiliate.
Monday, 5:00 PM PT: Deadline. Your score must be entered online or via the app and validated by the Affiliate Manager. The Affiliate Manager needs the current Judges Course for this.
Three Levels – The Right Fit for Everyone
- Rx – The prescribed version. Full weights, full standards.
- Scaled – Adapted weights and movements for advanced athletes.
- Foundations – The beginner version. Achievable for everyone.
You can choose your level each week. Nobody forces you to do three weeks of Rx if Scaled makes more sense.

The Spirit – Why the Open is More Than a Competition
Let's be honest: for most of us, it's not about the ranking. It's about something else.
You're doing the same workout as the fittest people on Earth. The exact same. Same movements, same standards. That's democratization in its purest form.
The Open is your annual fitness inventory. Measurable, honest, black and white. Where do you stand compared to your last year's self? That's the only question that matters.
Friday Night Lights. The atmosphere in the box when everyone comes together, cheers, suffers, celebrates – that often leads to an "Open Magic Moment." The first pull-up. An unexpected weight record. One more rep than imagined.
Community. It's the time of year when the box becomes an arena. Social cohesion is paramount – and that's what sticks. Not the ranking on page 400 of the leaderboard.
Your Strategy – How to Get the Most Out of It
How do you, as an everyday athlete, best approach the Open? Here are a few thoughts.
Preparation
Check your equipment. Jump rope, grips, wrist wraps – everything there and in good condition? Now is the time, not on Friday before the workout.
Practice the basics. Double-unders, wall walks, toes-to-bar, and thrusters regularly appear in the Open. Work on them now – without burning yourself out beforehand. CrossFit offers free Open Training Plans.
Mindset
Compare yourself to your last year's self. Not to the leaderboard leader. Every extra rep is progress.
Recovery
A redo – doing the workout twice – sounds tempting. But for everyday athletes, it rarely yields more than 2–3 places. Give it your all once and use the weekend to recover. The next week comes quickly enough.
Community First
Go to your box's Friday Night Lights. Cheer others on. Make memories, not just reps. That's what stays with you.
The Road to the Games – For the Ambitious
For most of us, the Open ends with pride and a protein shake. And that's perfectly fine – three weeks of giving it our all, measurable results, great memories.
For some, the journey is just beginning here. This is what the path to San Jose looks like:
Stage 1: Open (Feb 26 – Mar 16)
Everyone participates – hundreds of thousands worldwide. The top 25% in each age group qualify for the Quarterfinals. Teams that properly complete the Open advance directly to the online Semifinals.
Stage 2: Quarterfinals (Mar 26–30)
More technical, tougher, more volume. Online competition in your own box over 5 days. A certified judge must be present. Who advances:
- Individuals: Top 2,000 men and women worldwide
- Masters (35–54): Top 400 per age group
- Masters (55+) & Teens: Top 300 per age group
Stage 3: Semifinals (April – June)
The final filter. Live events for Individuals and Teams, online events for Age Groups. This is where the wheat is separated from the chaff.
Stage 4: CrossFit Games (July)
The grand finale at the SAP Center, San Jose, California. Only the top 30 men, 30 women, and 20 teams in the world.
Qualification Overview
| Stage | Target Group | Hurdle |
|---|---|---|
| Open → Quarterfinals | Individuals / Age Groups | Top 25 % worldwide |
| Quarterfinals → Semifinals | Individuals | Top 2,000 worldwide |
| Masters (35–54) | Top 400 per Division | |
| Teens / Masters (55+) | Top 300 per Division | |
| Semifinals → Games | Individuals | Top 30 worldwide |
| Teams | Top 20 worldwide |
And even if you're not flying to San Jose – you're part of the same journey.
Let's Go
Whether Rx, Scaled, or Foundations – if you participate on February 26th, you're part of the largest fitness community in the world. You're doing the same workout as the Fittest on Earth. And you will grow from it.
