CrossFit Open 2026: Änderungen und Tipps!

CrossFit Open 2026: Changes and tips!

It's that time again – the three most intense, emotional, and loudest weeks of the CrossFit year are upon us. Starting February 26th, the entire community will compete in the same workouts. From the Games pro to the beginner who's just landed their first double-unders.

The CrossFit Open is the world's largest amateur sports event. And you're invited.

This guide tells you everything: from the rule changes for 2026 to registration and perfect preparation – including an equipment check.

What's new in 2026?

CrossFit HQ will return to proven structures in 2026 – making the competition exciting again for the general public.

Quarterfinals are back – for the top 25%. That's the biggest change. In 2025, the bar was brutally high: only the top 1-2% advanced. In 2026, the top 25% worldwide will qualify for the quarterfinals. This means that if you train regularly and deliver solid Open workouts, you have a realistic chance of making it to the next round. A huge boost to your motivation.

Affiliate requirement. All open workouts must now be completed at an official CrossFit affiliate. The only exception: Workout 26.3 may be performed at Wodapalooza Miami.

Service Cup. The Service Cup (presented by the Air National Guard) features special leaderboards for first responders, military personnel, teachers, and medical staff. Cool.

More live action. Masters and teams will once again have on-site competitions (semifinals) instead of purely online formats.

The field of participants at the Games has been narrowed. Only the top 30 men and 30 women will compete in San Jose in July.

Adaptive Divisions. Athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities can compete in separate divisions with adapted standards. Same schedule, same energy.

New season, new setup? Now is the perfect time to check your equipment – more on that below.

The process – week by week

The rhythm is always the same for three weeks. Simple, clear, no stress.

Thursday, 9:00 PM CET: The workout will be announced via live stream. Four top athletes will be the first to perform it live. The announcement for 26.1 will take place at Moffett Air National Guard Base and will be broadcast on the CrossFit Games website, app, and YouTube channel.

Friday to Monday: Your time window to complete the workout in your affiliate program.

Monday, 5:00 PM PT: Deadline. Your score must be entered online or via the app and validated by the affiliate manager. The affiliate manager will need the current Judges Course for this.

Three levels – something for everyone

  • Rx – The prescribed version. Full weights, full standards.
  • Scaled – Adapted weights and movements for advanced users.
  • Foundations – The beginner's option. Doable for everyone.

You can choose a new level each week. Nobody is forcing you to stick with Rx for three weeks if Scaled makes more sense.

The Spirit – Why the Open are more than a competition

Let's be honest: For most of us, it's not about the ranking. It's about something else.

You're doing the same workout as the fittest people on Earth. The same thing. Same movements, same standards. That's democratization in its purest form.

The Open is your annual fitness inventory. Measurable, honest, in black and white. Where do you stand compared to how you were last year? That's the only question that matters.

Friday Night Lights. The atmosphere in the box, when everyone comes together, cheering, suffering, celebrating – that often leads to the "open magic moment." The first pull-up. An unexpected weight record. One more rep than expected.

Community. It's that time of year when the box becomes the arena. Social cohesion takes center stage – and that's what sticks with you. Not your ranking on page 400 of the leaderboard.

Your strategy – How to get the most out of it

How can you, as an everyday athlete, best approach the Open? Here are a few thoughts.

Preparation

Check your equipment. Jump rope, grips, wrist wraps – is everything there and in good condition? Now is the moment, not on Friday before the workout.

Practice the basics. Double-unders, wall walks, toes-to-bar, and thrusters are regularly featured in the Open. Work on them now—without burning out first. CrossFit offers free Open training plans .

Mindset

Compare yourself to how you were last year , not to the leaderboard leader. Every additional rep is progress.

regeneration

A redo – doing the workout twice – sounds tempting. But for everyday athletes, it rarely yields more than a 2-3 ranking. Give it your all once and use the weekend to recover. Next week will come soon enough.

Community First

Go to the Friday Night Lights of your box. Fire up others. Make memories, not just reps. That's what sticks.

The Road to the Games – For the Ambitious

For most of us, the Open ends with pride and a protein shake. And that's perfectly fine – three weeks of giving it our all, measurable results, awesome memories.

For some, the journey only begins here. This is what the road to San Jose looks like:

Stage 1: Open (February 26 – March 16)

Everyone participates – hundreds of thousands worldwide. The top 25% in each age group qualify for the quarterfinals. Teams that successfully complete the Open advance directly to the online semifinals.

Stage 2: Quarterfinals (March 26–30)

More technical, heavier, more volume. Online competition in your own gym over 5 days. A certified judge must be present. Who advances:

  • Individuals: Top 2,000 men and women worldwide
  • Masters (35–54): Top 400 per age group
  • Masters (55+) & Teens: Top 300 per age group

Stage 3: Semifinals (April – June)

The final filter. Live events for individuals and teams, online events for age groups. This is where the wheat is separated from the chaff.

Stage 4: CrossFit Games (July)

The grand finale at the SAP Center, San Jose, California. Only the top 30 men, 30 women, and 20 teams in the world remain.

Qualifications overview

Level Target audience hurdle
Open → Quarterfinals Individuals / Age Groups Top 25% worldwide
Quarterfinals → Semifinals Individuals Top 2,000 worldwide
Masters (35–54) Top 400 per division
Teens / Masters (55+) Top 300 per division
Semifinals → Games Individuals Top 30 worldwide
Teams Top 20 worldwide

And even if you don't fly to San Jose – you're part of the same journey.

Let's go

Whether you're in the Rx, Scaled, or Foundations category – if you compete on February 26th, you'll be part of the world's largest fitness community. You'll do the same workout as the fittest on Earth. And you'll grow from it.
