Description

Foam roller with knobs – how you roll with it

You lay your calf on the roller and roll slowly towards the back of your knee. The pressure sits on the knobs instead of the whole surface. That is why the Grid Foam Roller feels more intense than a smooth roller. What exactly happens in the tissue is something research still hasn't settled. On the result it has: right after rolling you get further into the movement, without losing strength for the next set.

It works well on the glutes, the outer thigh and the calves. Anywhere you want to stay on a small area. A whole thigh in one pass is the job of the smooth 46 cm roller. In return, this one fits most gym bags.

Large knobs instead of a grid – how the surface is built

The name is a little misleading. You won't find a grid of ridges here. The surface carries large, rounded knobs on diamond-shaped bases, staggered across the whole roller. They are matt and rounded, not pointed. That same structure keeps the roller in place. Even on a smooth gym floor it doesn't wander off under your leg.

At 12.5 cm in diameter the Grid is slimmer than our Foam Roller, and at 32 cm it is shorter too. The two do different jobs. The smooth one covers large areas in a single pass. The knobbed one stays on one spot.

Working single spots – glutes, calf, outer thigh – you take the Grid. Going for large areas, or rolling for the first time, the Foam Roller is the calmer choice. If you only need one roller, take the smooth one. You add the Grid when you want to work more pointedly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knobbed or smooth foam roller – which one should I take?
It depends on what you want to roll. Smooth spreads the pressure across the whole contact area and runs calmer underneath you. That suits large muscle groups, sensitive spots and the first roller in the house. Knobs bundle the pressure onto single points, which is more intense. That suits you when you want to stay on a small area. Better and worse don't come into it here. If you have no roller at all yet, start with the Foam Roller. You add the Grid as soon as you want to work more pointedly.
Does it hurt more with the knobs?
It feels more intense, because your weight sits on the knobs instead of on the whole roller. But you have the pressure in your own hands. The more weight you carry on your arms or your second leg, the gentler it gets. Start on an easy spot like the front of your thigh and work your way on from there.
Which body parts do I use the Grid Foam Roller on?
Glutes, front and outer thigh and the calves work well. It goes on the upper back too, though the smooth roller is the calmer choice there. You don't roll straight over the spine – the bone sits right under the skin. Leave the lower back out as well. If you want to work next to the spine specifically, the Foam Duo-Peanut Ball is built for it with its central groove.
Does the roller really have a grid?
No. The name suggests a pattern of ridges. What sits on the roller are large, rounded knobs on diamond-shaped bases, staggered across it. Grid is the product name here, not the surface.
What does rolling actually do for me?
The short-term effect is measured: right after rolling you are more mobile, and the strength for the next set doesn't suffer. What exactly happens in the tissue is something research still hasn't settled. That is why you roll in the warm-up and the cool-down, right around training. Not as a session of its own on a rest day. And don't roll into acute pain.
How do I clean the Grid Foam Roller?
Damp cloth over the surface, with a bit of soap if it needs it, then let it dry. Nothing gets caught between the knobs that you would have to brush out.

Customer reviews

Mine sits at home next to the smooth roller, and after heavy leg days I reach for the knobbed one. Mostly on the glutes – with the big roller I never really get to the point there. Don't expect magic, it is a roller with knobs and nothing else. But it takes up almost no room in my gym bag, and that is exactly why it actually comes along.
