From the package to the perfect floor.

Laying ECO, HG and HG CONNECT properly – and caring for them properly for years afterwards.

This guide walks you through every step – from the package that arrives at your door to the finished floor. After that we show you how to keep it clean and hard-wearing for years.

Basic rule: a rubber floor is forgiving. Lay it properly once and stick to a few care rules, and you have ten years of peace.

8 steps to a clean installation

1

Check the goods

Check before you even unpack: colour, quantity, dimensions, visible defects. Important: installed goods count as accepted. If something is not right, tell us before the installation.
2

Acclimatise (48-hour rule)

Store at 18–26 °C for 48 hours before and 48 hours after the installation, well ventilated. Lay the tiles out flat and individually – not stacked. Why: rubber reacts to its environment. Transport, storage, different sun exposure on individual tiles – acclimatisation evens all of that out. Without it, tiles settle later on. Worth knowing: rubber tiles are not millimetre-precise goods. Up to 1 % tolerance is normal. The staggered laying pattern (brick) compensates for it.
3

Prepare the subfloor

Suitable: dry screed, concrete, wooden floors, level tiles. Clean (vacuum with a soft brush), level (even out coarse unevenness), dry. Leave a perimeter gap of 5–10 mm to walls and fixed structural elements.
4

Get your tools ready

Measuring: folding rule or laser, chalk line, square. Cutting: cutter or jigsaw with a rubber blade, steel ruler, backing board. Laying: rubber mallet, rubbing board, double-sided industrial tape or rubber adhesive (optional), connectors (for HG PRO CONNECT).
5

Plan the layout

Set out the starting line in the middle of the room or along the longest right-angled edge. Running bond (brick) – recommended: staggered butt joints, a more stable bond, a more professional look. Stack bond as an alternative: simpler, but less stable. Plan the cut row at the wall – that is where the perimeter tiles get trimmed.
6

Installation: ECO/HG (floating)

Applies to ECO 15/25/40 Tile and HG CORE 15 Tile.

Installation: HG PRO CONNECT 25

With connectors – rock solid without glue

  1. Place the connectors within reach.
  2. Dry-lay the first row and align it (mind the starting line).
  3. Insert the connectors: lift the tile, push the connector into the sockets provided on the underside.
  4. Connect: position the next tile, press it onto the connector until you feel it click into place. The tile has to sit flat.
  5. Carry on row by row, fill every socket, cut the perimeter tiles to size.
  6. Check that it sits tight: the flooring has to lie rock solid – no movement under lateral load.

Step by step – the Connect connectors in action.

Fixing – often not needed at all

HG PRO CONNECT 25 needs no adhesive. The connectors create a positive-fit connection – the flooring holds rock solid and can be taken up again without residue.

For ECO and HG tiles without the Connect system: if you have laid them cleanly – tight against each other, without bulges, with a 5–10 mm perimeter gap – then in most cases no fixing is needed at all. The floor stays put through its own weight and the clean fit. Removal without residue if you need it.

If you want to or have to fix it: perimeter zones with double-sided tape or a non-corrosive adhesive. Full-surface bonding only for extreme use – follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.

Basic rule: rolled flooring almost always has to be glued down – and it is almost always ruined when you take it up. Tiled floors are modular and can be moved without fixing. Take tiles whenever possible.

Fitting ramps and corners

Ramps (15/25 mm): for step-free, trip-free transitions to other flooring.
Corners: for a clean finish at external corners.

Fix with tape or adhesive depending on the subfloor. Skirting covers the perimeter gap (5–10 mm) cleanly.

Final check and sign-off

  • Joint pattern even, no bulges or overlaps
  • Levelness checked
  • Perimeter gaps of 5–10 mm kept
  • All tiles checked for a tight fit

Recommendation: photos of the whole area and of details for your records – helps with later complaints and reorders.

The five most common mistakes – and how you avoid them

Mistake ConsequenceSolution
No acclimatisation Tiles settle or warp later onAlways acclimatise 48 h before and 48 h after the installation
Too much pressure when closing the joints Bulges formLay them snug, but free of tension
No perimeter gap Edges push against the wall and liftAlways leave a gap of 5–10 mm to the wall
Direct sunlight Fading, embrittlementShade the area during installation and first use
Wrong cleaning Surface damageNo hard brushes, do not over-wet

The floor is down – now care for it properly

Every floor is only as good as the care it gets. The good news: a high-quality rubber floor is easy to look after. The bad news: use the wrong products and you destroy it within weeks.

5 steps to cleaning it properly

1

Prepare the area

Clear the training area – remove equipment, barbells, boxes. Sweep or vacuum up coarse dirt, dust and chalk residue while dry.
2

Mix the cleaning solution

Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a mild, pH-neutral cleaner at the manufacturer's dosage.
3

Damp cleaning

Wipe barely damp, do not soak. Work in lanes. For heavy soiling: use a brush or a scrubber dryer.
4

Wipe down with clean water

Wipe down with clean water. Remove all cleaner residue completely – otherwise the floor gets sticky.
5

Let it dry

Let the floor dry completely before anyone trains on it again. Good ventilation speeds up the process.

How often should you clean?

Daily Sweep dry, wipe damp if needed
Weekly Thorough damp cleaning
Monthly / after events Deep clean with a brush or machine

Maximum service life – the essentials in two lists

Yes, please:

  • Remove spilled drinks and sweat immediately
  • Use soft brushes or pads
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners
  • Ventilate well after cleaning

Never:

  • Solvents, alcohol, vinegar, aggressive degreasers
  • Pressure washers
  • Hard plastic brushes or scouring pads
  • Standing water (including after cleaning)

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine ECO and HG at the same height?
Yes, if the thickness matches. ECO CORE 15 + HG CORE 15 sit at the same height, as do ECO PRO 25 + HG PRO CONNECT 25. Different thicknesses need a transition (ramp).
How long does a high-quality rubber floor last?
With proper care and normal use, 10+ years. We have customers whose HG floors have been in daily use for over 15 years.
What do I do about a damaged tile?
Swap out the single tile. If you have laid it modularly (Connect, puzzle, loose), you swap the tile in a few minutes. That is why we recommend planning for 2–3 spare tiles with your first order.
Can I drop bumper plates straight onto the floor?
Yes – that is what it is built for. For heavy drops from a height (Olympic lifting) we recommend ECO HEAVY 40 or HG PRO CONNECT 25 with an additional drop platform.
What do I do about odours after the installation?
A rubber floor always smells at the start – that is normal. Noticeably milder with HG, more intense with ECO. After 1–2 weeks with good ventilation it is practically gone with HG, with ECO it takes a bit longer. If it still smells strongly after a month: get in touch with us.
Does a thicker rubber floor solve my vibration problem in an apartment building?
Only to a degree. A thicker floor (25 mm instead of 15 mm, or ECO HEAVY 40) dampens impact and airborne noise considerably better. But structure-borne noise – the vibration travelling through the concrete slab into neighbouring flats – is not something you get rid of completely with the floor alone. If your neighbours are already sensitised or you do heavy Olympic lifts, you need a combination: ECO HEAVY 40 as the top layer, Getzner g-Fit Shock Absorb modules underneath for decoupling, and for the drop zone Dropping Mats or alternatively Soft Drop Blocks.
