How much does a home gym cost? We priced out three rooms

7 min read

How much does a home gym cost? The most honest answer we know: work it out. With your room, your training and today's prices – not a rule of thumb.

That's exactly why we built our home gym configurator. You pick your training, enter your room's dimensions and, from step three, see a complete proposal with a price. No email address, no waiting for a callback. We ran three rooms through it ourselves – here's what came out.

In short: In our three example rooms, a home gym costs between roughly CHF 1'100 and CHF 6'000, including rubber flooring.

Three rooms, three proposals

Training Room Proposal
Functional — dumbbells, kettlebells, pull-ups 3 × 2.5 m, 240 cm high CHF 1'470
Barbell — rack, bar, plates, bench 4 × 3 m, 250 cm high CHF 2'558
Barbell plus cable — with the A-PEX Rack 5 × 4 m, 260 cm high CHF 5'972

How to get your own number

Five steps. The work happening in the background is what would otherwise go into a consultation.

1. Choose your training

Strength training with a barbell or versatile functional training. This sets the starting proposal. You can add dumbbells and kettlebells to the barbell setup as well.

2. Enter your room

Length, width, height – and the configurator draws your room to scale. If it's an awkward shape, you enter the area you actually use. Then it asks where you measured the height: the training floor adds 1.5 to 2.5 cm, and it subtracts that for you. Last comes the wall question: concrete, floor only, no drilling at all, or “I do not know yet”.

3. See your proposal

This is where a price appears for the first time. And behind every line is a calculation you don't have to do yourself:

  • Flooring: the number of tiles for your area, with 5 % for offcuts already included.
  • Rack: one that fits under your ceiling. If less than 15 cm of clearance remains, it flags it as tight.
  • Bar: matched to the length of the room. If the longest wall is under 4 m, it suggests the shorter 183 cm bar instead of the 220 cm one.

4. Adjust and add

150 instead of 70 kg of plates, a different bench, a plyo box, wall ball or rings – the total updates with every change. And where do the dumbbells and kettlebells go? It works out the right shelving for that too.

5. Order or have it checked

If everything is in stock, you add the whole setup to your cart in one click. If you want assembly, an item is missing or you're not sure yet, you send it to us as a request – more on that below.

The three examples in detail

Functional on 7.5 m²: CHF 1'470

A guest room or a corner of the basement, 3 × 2.5 m. No barbell, no power rack – here the free floor space is part of the setup.

  • Rubber flooring, 8 tiles of 1 m² — CHF 368
  • Hex dumbbells, one pair each of 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg — CHF 452
  • Kettlebells 8, 12 and 16 kg — CHF 174
  • Squat stand with pull-up bar, 220 cm — CHF 476

What we learned: Answer the wall question with “concrete, I'm allowed to drill”, and the configurator swaps the squat stand for a wall-mounted pull-up system. The setup then costs CHF 1'095.50. One answer, CHF 374.50 difference.

Barbell on 12 m²: CHF 2'558

The classic home gym for squats, bench press and deadlifts, 4 × 3 m.

  • Rubber flooring, 13 tiles of 1 m² — CHF 598
  • CPR-150 Power Rack, 220 cm high, stands without floor anchoring — CHF 949
  • Barbell 20 kg — CHF 330
  • Bumper plates, 70 kg — CHF 372
  • Change plates, 7.5 kg, for jumps in 2.5 kg steps — CHF 99
  • Flat bench — CHF 210

What we learned: We entered the same room with a 230 instead of a 250 cm ceiling. With the flooring in, 228.5 cm remain usable. The power rack still fits, but the configurator flags it as tight. If everything has to stay movable, it suggests a 180 cm squat stand instead. The setup then costs CHF 2'194. So a low ceiling doesn't make the gym more expensive – it just changes the choice.

Barbell plus cable on 20 m²: CHF 5'972

5 × 4 m, 260 cm high. Here the A-PEX Rack replaces the power rack. It combines rack, cable pulley and Smith bar on 200 × 160 cm. Felix, our founder, considers it the best home gym solution we have – his personal view from advising customers.

  • Rubber flooring, 21 tiles of 1 m² — CHF 966
  • A-PEX Rack — CHF 3'995
  • Barbell, 77.5 kg of plates and flat bench as above — CHF 1'011

What we learned: The Smith bar doesn't replace a free barbell, so the bar stays in the setup. And with the A-PEX, we go through height and assembly with you before you order. The configurator records this as an open point so it doesn't get lost.

What the total doesn't include

  • Shipping depends on weight and is calculated at checkout.
  • Assembly is quoted individually. If you select it in the configurator, your setup goes to us as a request and you get a quote.
  • Storage for dumbbells is optional and not included in the totals above.

Not sure yet? Send us your draft

Not every proposal is finished after five steps. Maybe you don't know whether your wall can hold a rack. Maybe you want to talk about the bench, or it's only a first draft you'd like to go through with someone who builds home gyms.

That's what “Personal help with this setup” in the configurator is for. Your setup comes along, you don't fill in anything twice. Tell us what to check, attach a photo of the room and choose whether we write to you or call you back. It's not an order – it's the start of a conversation. Every configuration has its own reference that reaches us with your request, so we're talking about the same setup from the very start.

The same route applies when an item is out of stock. The configurator shows you right away and suggests alternatives that are available. If you still want that exact item, you can't order the setup directly – you send it to us as a request instead. We give you the delivery date and, by arrangement, reserve the items or ship part of the order in advance.

You don't have to buy everything at once

None of these setups needs to be complete on day one. Flooring first, because everything stands on it. Then whatever you'll use every week. Dumbbells and kettlebells can be added one by one as you get stronger. How we approach that order is covered in our home gym guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home gym cost?

In our three examples (including rubber flooring and VAT): CHF 1'470 for a functional setup on 7.5 m², CHF 2'558 for a barbell setup on 12 m² and CHF 5'972 for a setup with the A-PEX Rack on 20 m². Shipping and assembly come on top. Our home gym configurator works out your own number.

How much space do you need for a home gym?

It depends on your training. In our example, a functional setup with dumbbells, kettlebells and a squat stand works on 7.5 m², a barbell setup on 12 m². A power rack needs a 121 × 121 cm footprint, a barbell is 220 cm long (the short version 183 cm), and you need room around it for loading and moving.

What ceiling height do I need for a rack?

The power racks in the configurator are 220 cm high, and we plan at least 15 cm of clearance above them. Remember that the training floor adds 1.5 to 2.5 cm. If your room is lower, the squat stand also comes in a 180 cm version.

Do I have to enter my contact details to see the price?

No. You see the proposal with its price from step three, without signing up. We only need your contact details if you send us your setup to check.

What happens if an item is out of stock?

The configurator flags it and suggests alternatives that are available. If you still want that exact item, you send us your setup as a request. We give you the delivery date and, by arrangement, reserve the items or ship part of the order in advance.

Is assembly included in the price?

No. If you set it up yourself, you order directly via the cart. Assembly by cross equip is quoted individually and goes through a request with your setup.

Your room, your number

Three examples are just three examples. Your basement might be 2.35 m high, have one corner too many and a plasterboard wall you can't drill into. That's exactly the kind of room we built the configurator for. Measure quickly, enter the numbers – and see what's possible for your training.
