Description

The heavy single – and what the material does in it

You are standing under the bar, and today this is the heaviest attempt. You go down, and somewhere in the last third you notice it: your normal sleeves give you too little back. Your knees have long been warm, that is not what this is about any more. What you want down there is a hard point to work against.

That is exactly what this sleeve does. The extra stiff neoprene resists the bend – the deeper you go, the more clearly it pushes back. Out of the hole you get that resistance handed back to you. No substitute for strength, but your position gets something to push against.

Which makes this a sleeve for powerlifters and strongmen – for the days when few reps with plenty of weight are on the plan. Anyone running every squat set in these notices quickly that they are not built for it.

Extra stiff neoprene, cut straight

The sleeve is a straight cylinder without shaping seams – no pre-formed knee curve, no curved panels. The pressure is spread evenly all the way round because of it, and that is exactly where the resistance in the bend comes from. That is a deliberate build, not a stripped-down version: a contoured cut settles more softly into the bend, a straight one holds against it. Which is better is decided by your training – not by the sleeve.

On the outside the neoprene is fabric-backed, a zigzag seam runs over the edge top and bottom, and a raised rubber logo sits on the lower hem. The length stands out: it covers a good stretch of thigh and reaches down below the knee – considerably more leg than a classic sleeve. More material on the leg also means more surface doing the work.

Honest about the flip side: once the sets get long and you drop into flexion again and again across a whole session, the resistance turns into nothing but work at some point. If you are constantly in and out of knee flexion in the WOD, reach for the contoured Knee Sleeves Neopren 7mm – those stay more mobile.

Which size fits you?

There are four sizes, S to XL – an XS we do not carry in this model. And straight to the honest part: for this model we have no size chart. No documented centimetre values for S to XL are available to us, and we do not write down numbers we have pieced together ourselves. Instead of a chart you get a recommendation from us – with a stiff sleeve that is the more reliable route anyway.

What you should not do: carry the size over from another sleeve line. Every line has its own measuring point. Our Knee Sleeves you measure at the knee itself, the Sticky and all the Rehband models 10 cm below it. Two spots on the leg give two different numbers, even where the charts look identical on paper – take your old size across unchecked and it is easy to order the wrong one here.

The second mistake costs you most with a stiff sleeve: going one size up so it slips on more easily. A stiff sleeve that sits loose gives you nothing back down there – at that point you might as well take a soft one. Measure your knee circumference, send us the number and tell us which size you currently wear. We will place you before you order.

After push-back out of the material on the heavy attempt? Take this one – stiffer than this we do not go. Training mixed, with high reps and plenty of switching between exercises? Then the contoured Knee Sleeves Neopren 7mm are the better call: more mobile and available from size XS.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much stiffer are they than normal knee sleeves?
You notice the difference on the very first rep. Normal neoprene gives way in the bend, this one works against it – down in the position that is real push-back rather than just compression and warmth. You will still not find a millimetre figure here: we only state values we can back up, and for this model we do not have a clean one. The stiffness comes from the neoprene mix and the straight cut anyway, not from thickness alone.
Is there a size chart?
Not for this model – we have no documented centimetre values for S to XL, and estimated numbers do not help you when you pull them on. We do it personally: measure your knee circumference, send us the number along with the size you wear in other sleeves, and we will tell you which one fits here. And please do not go bigger just because it goes on more easily then – a stiff sleeve sitting loose gives you nothing back down there.
Will they get me through the equipment check?
Not for a start under IPF rules. The federation permits brands carried on its own list only – cross equip is not entered there, regardless of how the sleeve is built. We would rather tell you beforehand than on competition day. For training, for the box and for formats with no equipment list at all, none of that changes anything.
Are they any good for WODs and high reps?
Honest answer: no. What helps on the heavy single costs you strength on 50 wall balls that you need elsewhere. For mixed sessions you are better off with a contoured 5 or 7 mm sleeve – this one belongs to the heavy days.
Do they come single or as a pair?
As a pair: one item, two sleeves in the same size, left and right covered. Keep that in mind when you compare with Rehband models – those are sold singly.
How do I put them on and how do I keep them clean?
Pull them up over your foot and roll them onto the knee bit by bit from below – yanking at the hem with force gets you nothing but frustration. Stiff sleeves go on firmly, that comes with the territory. Air them out after training and let them dry in the air. Radiators and tumble dryers go after the neoprene.

Customer reviews

I saw these as a powerlifting niche for a long time, until I pulled them on myself on a heavy squat day. Down in the position you suddenly have something to push against – that is a different feeling from warmth and a bit of compression. On mixed days, on the other hand, they go back into the bag, that is simply too much resistance for me there. And that is exactly how I would recommend them: for the heavy attempts, not for every set.
