A weight that only moves together
The CrossFit Worm comes straight out of team competition - and it is the most honest team tool we know. The moment that thing sits on your shoulders, nobody's individual result counts any more. You move in the same rhythm or you do not move at all. Start too fast and you push the rest down. Drop the worm without calling it out and you take everyone with you.
That is exactly what makes it so valuable for boxes, clubs and athletic teams: you train coordination, timing and communication under load - things that simply never come up in solo training. As a team WOD in class, in the build-up to a team event or as the centrepiece of a team day: the worm is always the part everyone talks about afterwards.
One thing belongs here: it does not work solo. Length and weight are built for several pairs of shoulders - on your own you will neither get it up cleanly nor move it in any useful way. If you train by yourself, a sandbag is the better fit.
Which size fits your team?
Pick the size by team size, not by fitness level. The table shows why: across all three variants, roughly 38 to 42 kg land on each shoulder. More people do not make the worm lighter - they make it longer and harder to coordinate. The four-person version is the most demanding one, simply because four people in step are tougher than two.
Factor in the space: at 330 cm the four-person worm needs a clear lane to run and turn - in a tight box that quickly turns into a slalom. If you mostly train in pairs, take the two-person version. At 180 cm it stays manageable in smaller rooms too.
| Variant | Weight | Length | Diameter | Weight per person (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | approx. 80 kg | 180 cm | 30 cm | 40 kg |
| 3 people | approx. 127 kg | 280 cm | 30 cm | 42 kg |
| 4 people | approx. 154 kg | 330 cm | 30 cm | 38.5 kg |
Built to come apart - indoors and outdoors
Every worm breaks down into single parts. Sounds like a detail, but it is the difference between "in the way" and "comes along". Taken apart it fits in the car and travels to the competition, the team event or training camp. In the box it sits on the shelf instead of lying across the floor.
The material is built for hard use and handles indoor and outdoor alike - hall, parking lot, grass. The worm is carried on the shoulders: you shoulder it together, run, set it down, pick it up again. Simple in setup, brutal in effect.

The worm is a team tool, not a replacement for the sandbag - it does something no solo tool can. If you train in teams regularly or prepare for team competitions, it is the right call. For solo training, take a Sandbag. On size: pick the variant that matches your usual team size.

Customer reviews
In our box the worm is the moment that shows how well a team really works. Four strong people who do not talk to each other are slower than four average ones running in step. I have seen it often enough - and suffered through it myself. If you want to train team spirit, there is no more direct tool.
