The Smith machine: guided, safe, even without a partner

The Smith machine guides the barbell in a fixed track. That means you can press and squat heavy without the bar tipping away – even on your own, without a spotter. You can catch it on the safety hooks at any time.

Our A-Line systems are built for daily use: smooth-running guides, load ratings of 200 kg and up, expandable with a cable machine and attachments. You start with what you need and build out as your training grows.

What can you train on the Smith machine?

The guided bar makes the big lifts safer: bench press, squats, shoulder press, upright rows. Because the path is fixed, you focus fully on the muscle work – ideal for heavy sets on your own or targeted isolation.

Add a cable machine and you get lat pulldowns, rows and cable isolation on top. That covers almost your whole body at one station – without setting up five separate machines.

Built for daily studio use

A Smith machine lives by its guide. That's why we rely on precise rails and bearings that still run cleanly after thousands of reps – no juddering, no play. We run the same equipment daily in our own box.

And because your training changes, the station grows with you: a cable machine, attachments and handles can be added. That turns the multipress into a complete power station.

Frequently asked questions about the Smith machine

What is a Smith machine?

A Smith machine is a strength-training machine with a barbell guided vertically in rails. The linear guide lets you train heavy weights safely without a training partner, since you can hook the bar into the safety catches at any time.

Are a multipress and a Smith machine the same thing?

Yes – “Multipresse” is the German term for a Smith machine; both describe the same machine. The guided barbell and the characteristic rail system are identical, regardless of the name.

How much does a Smith machine cost?

Prices for a Smith machine vary a lot depending on features and quality. Entry-level models are available on a small budget, while professional systems like our A-Line models with a cable machine and modular extensions sit in the higher price segment.

Which exercises work on the Smith machine?

On the Smith machine you can effectively do bench press, squats, shoulder press and rows. Upper body: bench press, shoulder press, upright rows. Lower body: squats, lunges, calf raises. And with a cable machine, isolation exercises for every muscle group.

Is training on the Smith machine as effective as free weights?

The Smith machine offers more safety through its guided movement and allows focused muscle training. While free weights demand more stabiliser work, the multipress lets you move heavier loads and isolate muscle groups specifically – both have their place. For varied training, free weights are a good complement.

Which Smith machine suits my home gym?

It depends on your available space and training goals. Compact Smith machines fit smaller rooms, while multifunctional models with integrated weight stacks and a dual adjustable cable station offer maximum variety. With the right setup you get a lot of training out of little space.

Can I train on the Smith machine without weights?

Yes – the empty bar of a Smith machine weighs between 10 and 20 kg depending on the model, perfect for warm-ups or technique work. With adjustable safety stops you can also do bodyweight exercises like inverted rows.

Do I need extra weights for my Smith machine?

That depends on the model. Smith machines with integrated weight stacks give you ready-to-use training up to 200 kg, while plate-loaded versions need separate weight plates.
