A weight bench doesn't look like it leaves much to decide. Four feet, a pad, done. That's exactly why it gets bought last — and then it doesn't match the rack, your height, or your training. From the setups we've been kitting out for years, we know what it actually comes down to.
Four figures sit in every spec sheet and almost nobody compares them: load rating, seat height, pad width and the adjustment angles. This article works through them one by one — what the manufacturer specs really mean, and where we'll say plainly who our own benches aren't made for.
First question: flat or adjustable?
That's the fork in the road. Everything else comes after.
A flat bench has no mechanism. No pin, no joint, nothing that can develop play. It's more stable than any adjustable bench in the same price range, it's lighter, and it sits still. If your training is bench press, rows and dumbbell work, you don't need anything else.
An adjustable bench is what you buy for the incline angles — incline press, seated shoulder press, incline curls. You pay for that with weight, price and a mechanism that eventually needs attention.
Our honest advice: if you're unsure, start flat. A good flat bench costs about half, and within three months you'll know yourself whether you're missing the angles. The other way round — buying an expensive adjustable bench and never moving it out of the 0° position — is the more common mistake.
Load rating: the number that gets misread most
Almost every bench is advertised with a kilo figure. "Up to 300 kg", "up to 450 kg". Before you compare two benches, you need to know what that number actually covers — and it varies from one manufacturer to the next.
First question: is your bodyweight included? Some ratings mean total load — you plus the bar. Others mean only the weight you load on. That's easily 90 kilos between the two readings. Which is why our High Grade bench states "up to 350 kg total load": you're counted in.
Second question: what use is it tested for? The standard for training benches (ISO 20957-4) defines three classes — H for home use, S for studio and gym use, I for professional settings with higher accuracy requirements. A class H bench isn't built worse; it's tested for a different frequency. When two benches carry the same kilo figure but different classes, the class tells you more about lifespan than the number does.
And the allowance for dynamic load? Smaller than people assume. You barely accelerate the bar in a bench press — near your maximum it's already decelerating over the final quarter of the range. So if you plan in reserve, it isn't because of bar acceleration. It's for two other load cases: sitting down heavily, which briefly puts a multiple of your bodyweight onto a small area, and off-centre load — a heavy dumbbell set down one-handed on the edge of the pad. That second one creates a tipping moment, not double the weight; what helps there is the width of the feet, not the kilo rating.
So our advice is unspectacular: a moderate reserve above bodyweight plus working weight is enough. More important than any safety factor is knowing what the number includes — and whether the class matches how you'll use it.
Second point, more telling than the rating itself: how heavy is the bench? Own weight isn't a drawback, it's the most honest information you get about how it's built. Our High Grade Adjustable Bench weighs 51 kg because it's built from 3 mm steel tube. A bench of the same size at 18 kg doesn't have that material — and you feel it on the first heavy set.
Seat height — the point almost everyone misses
This is where most home gyms lose money. The bench gets bought, the rack is already there, and then the two don't work together.
Two things depend on the height:
- Your feet. Both soles need to sit flat on the floor when you bench. Too high and you're on your toes, losing the stability your power comes from. Too low and your knees get cramped.
- Your rack. The J-hooks need to go low enough for you to unrack the bar cleanly while lying down. On wall racks with coarse hole spacing that doesn't always work out — four centimetres of bench height can decide whether the combination works.
The international bench press competition standard is 45 cm pad height. If you're around average height, that serves you well. Below 1.70 m a lower bench is usually more comfortable; from about 1.90 m it can be higher.
And since it always comes up: rubber flooring counts. A 25 mm tile raises the bench by two and a half centimetres — and your feet with it, so effectively nothing changes. It gets different when the bench stands on rubber and you're on concrete beside it. When in doubt, measure the finished setup, not the spec sheet.
Pad width: 25, 28 or 35 centimetres
Pad width is a genuine trade-off, and there's no width that's right for everyone.
Narrow (around 25 cm) leaves your shoulder girdle free. You can retract and depress your shoulder blades without the pad in the way — the position you press stably from. The downside: broader backs lose side support.
Wide (30 cm and up) carries more, feels more comfortable, and is nicer for rows and flyes. In return it pushes against the shoulder blades of larger athletes.
The compromise that works for nearly everyone in practice sits at 28 to 30 cm. Our HG Flat Bench has 28 cm, the Flat Bench 25 cm. On adjustable benches, watch one detail: good models are narrower at the top than the bottom. On our High Grade bench that's 27 cm at the upper back and 35 cm below — narrow where the shoulder blades work, wide where the hips sit.
Adjustment: it's not the number of positions, it's where they are
"Eight positions" sounds better than "six" and tells you very little. What matters is whether the angles sit where you need them.
The most-used incline angle is between 30° and 45°. A bench that jumps from 0° straight to 55° has plenty of positions on paper and still a gap exactly where you train. Our Adjustable Bench has eight positions from flat to steep, the High Grade ten positions from 0° to 75°.
Two things that matter more day to day than any position count:
- The seat has to adjust too. Without it you slide down at steep angles and hold yourself in place with your legs instead of pressing. Three or four positions is enough.
- Pins, not a toothed rail. A pin lock has no play and can still be tightened years later. Ladder and tooth systems are faster, but over time they develop the rattle you know from old gyms.
Feet: three points or four
A small detail with consequences. A three-legged design — like our Competition Flat Bench — puts the wide base at the head end and a single leg at the foot end. So exactly where your feet go, there's no cross brace in the way. You can go wide or narrow and build leg drive without hitting anything. For anyone pressing heavy, that's the most noticeable difference in the whole comparison.
Four feet give you more tipping stability when you work from the side — single-arm rows with a knee on the bench, for instance.
On soft flooring the same applies either way: the smaller the contact patch, the deeper the foot works into the rubber. On a 40 mm floor with high elasticity, a bench with narrow feet can wander. Wide feet or a plate underneath solve it.
When space is tight
A folding bench is a real compromise, and we'll say what it costs you. Our Folding Flat Bench drops from 43 cm to 20 cm and disappears behind a door. For very heavy loads and dynamic work a fixed bench is more stable — that's not a marketing caveat, it's physics: every joint is a place where movement can develop.
For normal home gym training with sensible weights it works well. If you regularly go to your limit, a fixed bench serves you better.

How to go about it
- Write down what you'll do on it. Only bench press and rows? Flat bench. Seated shoulder press and incline? Adjustable.
- Do the load maths. Bodyweight plus working weight, plus a moderate reserve. More important than the margin: check whether the manufacturer's figure already includes your bodyweight — and whether the class matches how you'll use it.
- Measure your rack. Lowest J-hook position — does the bench height match it?
- Sit on it if you can. Pad firmness and width are personal, and you can't read that off a table. Our showroom has the benches out to try.
- Buy once. A bench is the longest-living piece in a home gym. There's hardly another product where better build quality pays off this clearly.
