Opened in February 2019, and a year later Covid arrived. The lease at the old location was fixed-term, the new one had just been signed – and then the lockdown cut the income. They pulled the move off with a crowdfunding campaign, carried by members, families and friends. Today CrossFit Kauil sits in a wide hall with a wooden gallery, yellow lane markings running its full length and a rig framing the end wall with its Aztec mask.

We got to know each other long before this hall existed – training together at CrossFit RFT. A no-brainer, as they put it themselves, plus a warehouse nearby and short lead times. Since 2019 it has grown into more than 40 deliveries. It started with ECO CORE flooring across the whole training area, then turf for the lane and the rig with rings and eight climbing ropes. Plus the cardio corner with six air bikes and the AssaultRunner.

If something isn't right, there is always someone you can reach. If a piece of kit breaks, it gets replaced – or an alternative is offered straight away. And the favourite piece in the setup? The big rig – 280 members and 37 classes a week run over it, and it is still in top condition.

Why cross equip?

We knew Felix and Mirjam from training together. Plus the proximity: a Swiss company, the warehouse round the corner, short lead times.

Biggest challenge?

Finding the right location for the long term – and then moving in the middle of Covid.
